SPLICED's Best Picture:
"TITANIC"
|
Best Picture:
Sure Things:
"TITANIC"
"GOOD WILL HUNTING"
"AS GOOD AS IT GETS"
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
The fifth Best Picture slot will likely go to "AMISTAD" or "THE ICE STORM," but there are several more films that could sneak in as spoilers, including "THE SWEET HEREAFTER," "CONTACT," "KUNDUN," and THE FULL MONTY".
|
Best Picture Nominees:
"AS GOOD AS IT GETS"
"THE FULL MONTY"
"GOOD WILL HUNTING"
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
"TITANIC"
|
Best Picture:
"TITANIC"
Why it will win:
Because it's an epic in the greatest tradition of Hollywood and it's the kind of movie everyone in the business wishes they could make.
"Ben Hur," "Gone With the Wind," "Lawrence of Arabia" -- They don't make them like that anymore. Wanna bet?
|
Best Picture Winner:
"TITANIC"
|
SPLICED's Best Director:
James Cameron, "TITANIC"
|
Best Director:
Sure Things:
James Cameron, "TITANIC"
Curtis Hanson, "L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
James L. Brooks, "AS GOOD AS IT GETS"
Good Bets:
Steven Spielberg, "AMISTAD"
Ang Lee, "THE ICE STORM"
The Competition:
Barry Levinson, "WAG THE DOG"
Atom Egoyan, "THE SWEET HEREAFTER"
Gus Van Sant, "GOOD WILL HUNTING"
Martin Scorsese, "KUNDUN"
|
Best Director Nominees:
Peter Cattaneo, "THE FULL MONTY"
Gus Van Sant, "GOOD WILL HUNTING"
Curtis Hanson, "L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
Atom Egoyan, "THE SWEET HEREAFTER"
James Cameron, "TITANIC"
|
Best Director:
James Cameron, "TITANIC"
Why he'll win:
Director and Picture Oscars are almost always paired, but Cameron also enjoys the passionate admiration of his colleges after his highly-publicized "Titanic" penance. He sacrificed for his art -- taking tons of heat over post-production delays and refusing his director's salary when the film's budget went exponential -- and he was vindicated with critical acclaim and world-record box office receipts.
|
Best Director Winner:
James Cameron, "TITANIC"
|
SPLICED's Best Actor:
Ralph Finnes, "OSCAR & LUCINDA"
|
Best Actor:
Sure Things:
Djimon Hounsou, "AMISTAD"
Peter Fonda, "ULEE'S GOLD"
Matt Damon, "GOOD WILL HUNTING"
Jack Nicholson, "AS GOOD AS IT GETS"
Battling for the fifth slot, all with an equal chance:
Ralph Finnes, "OSCAR & LUCINDA"
Robert De Niro, "WAG THE DOG"
Dustin Hoffman, "WAG THE DOG"
Robert Duvall, "THE APOSTLE"
Daniel Day-Lewis, "THE BOXER"
Ian Holm, "THE SWEET HEREAFTER"
The strongest category this year, so the news here will be who is left out. Many pundits are expecting Leonard DiCaprio to get a nod for "Titanic." Won't happen. The field is too packed with brilliant, established actors in great performances to make room for a cheeky neophyte.
Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Kline are both potential nominees, but they will likely cancel themselves out with split votes -- Jackson for "EVE'S BAYOU" and "JACKIE BROWN," Kline for "THE ICE STORM" and "IN & OUT."
|
Best Actor Nominees:
Matt Damon, "GOOD WILL HUNTING"
Robert Duvall, "THE APOSTLE"
Peter Fonda, "ULEE'S GOLD"
Dustin Hoffman, "WAG THE DOG"
Jack Nicholson, "AS GOOD AS IT GETS"
|
Best Actor:
Jack Nicholson, "AS GOOD AS IT GETS"
Why he'll win:
Because this is his best performance in years.
Recently Nicholson has become one of a select group of actors who are paid mostly just to show up. He's been doing nothing but being "Jack" for so long that to see him become this absorbed in a character reminds us of why he is a legend in the first place.
|
Best Actor Winner:
Jack Nicholson, "AS GOOD AS IT GETS"
|
SPLICED's Best Actress:
Victoire Thivisol, "PONETTE"
|
Best Actress:
The Sure Thing:
Helen Hunt, "AS GOOD AS IT GETS"
And probably:
Judi Dench, "HER MAJESTY MRS. BROWN"
Joan Allen, "THE ICE STORM"
Helena Bonham Carter, "THE WINGS OF THE DOVE"
Kate Winslet, "TITANIC"
The Competition:
Jodi Foster, "CONTACT"
Julie Christie, "AFTERGLOW"
Parker Posey, "THE HOUSE OF YES"
Emily Watson, "THE BOXER"
Cate Blanchett, "OSCAR & LUCINDA"
|
Best Actress Nominees:
Helena Bonham Carter, "THE WINGS OF THE DOVE"
Julie Christie, "AFTERGLOW"
Judi Dench, "HER MAJESTY MRS. BROWN"
Helen Hunt, "AS GOOD AS IT GETS"
Kate Winslet, "TITANIC"
|
Best Actress:
Helen Hunt, "AS GOOD AS IT GETS"
Why she'll win:
Because her pained, potent, affecting performance as a single mom who lives solely to provide for her sickly child shows definitively that Hunt is a major dramatic talent.
Bonham Carter, Christie and Dench all gave brilliant performances, as the Acadmey would expect of them, but Hunt left a lasting impression.
|
Best Actress Winner:
Helen Hunt, "AS GOOD AS IT GETS"
|
SPLICED's Best Supporting Actor:
Robert Downey, Jr., "ONE NIGHT STAND"
|
Best Supporting Actor:
Sure Things:
Burt Reynolds, "BOOGIE NIGHTS"
Rupert Everett, "MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING"
Good Bets:
Anthony Hopkins, "AMISTAD"
Robert Downey, Jr., "ONE NIGHT STAND"
Kevin Spacey, "L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
The Competition:
Morgan Freeman, "AMISTAD"
James Cromwell, Guy Pearce or Russell Crowe, "L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
Robert De Niro, "JACKIE BROWN"
Robin Williams, "GOOD WILL HUNTING"
|
Best Supporting Actor Nominees:
Robert Forester, "JACKIE BROWN"
Anthony Hopkins, "AMISTAD"
Greg Kinnear, "AS GOOD AS IT GETS"
Burt Reynolds, "BOOGIE NIGHTS"
Robin Williams, "GOOD WILL HUNTING"
|
Best Supporting Actor:
Burt Reynolds, "BOOGIE NIGHTS"
Why he'll win:
Because no one expected him to be that good.
In all honesty, this is the most up-for-grabs category this year, largely because the should-be winner -- Rupert Everett, the charming and hilarious gay sidekick in "My Best Friend's Wedding" -- was snubbed in favor of the vastly inferior Kinnear in much the same role. But Hopkins doesn't need another Oscar, Williams' hermit-shrink was great only because director Gus Van Sant kept him on a very short leash and sentimental favorite Forester was fine in "Jackie Brown," but forgettable.
|
Best Supporting Actor Winner:
Robin Williams, "GOOD WILL HUNTING"
|
SPLICED's Best Supporting Actress:
Joan Cusack, "IN & OUT"
|
Best Supporting Actress:
Sure Things:
Joan Cusack, "IN & OUT"
Gloria Stuart, "TITANIC"
Julianne Moore, "BOOGIE NIGHTS"
Good Bets:
Kim Basinger, "L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
Sigourney Weaver, "THE ICE STORM"
The Competition:
Sarah Polley, "THE SWEET HEREAFTER"
Alison Elliott, "THE WINGS OF THE DOVE"
Debbi Morgan, "EVE'S BAYOU"
|
Best Supporting Actress Nominees:
Kim Basinger, "L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
Joan Cusack, "IN & OUT"
Minnie Driver, "GOOD WILL HUNTING"
Julianne Moore, "BOOGIE NIGHTS"
Gloria Stuart, "TITANIC"
|
Best Supporting Actress:
Joan Cusack, "IN & OUT"
Why she'll win:
Because, to quote "In & Out" screenwriter Paul Rudnick, "she is helplessly funny."
Stuart is, of course, a sentimental favorite. But when the Academy gives an Oscar to a long-time veteran it's usually tantamount to a lifetime achievement award, and the "Titanic" co-star hasn't worked in years. Moore is just as deserving as Cusack, but she is hugely talented and bound to be nominated again. Driver's nomination for essentially playing a high-IQ twist on the standard girlfriend role was a fluke, as was Basinger's spot-on performance in "Confidential" (although she is the only other nominee with a real shot).
|
Best Supporting Actress Winner:
Kim Basinger, "L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
|
SPLICED's Best Original Screenplay:
"GOOD WILL HUNTING," Ben Affleck & Matt Damon
|
Best Original Screenplay:
Sure Things:
"TITANIC," James Cameron
"GOOD WILL HUNTING," Ben Affleck & Matt Damon
"BOOGIE NIGHTS," Paul Thomas Anderson
"AS GOOD AS IT GETS," James L. Brooks & Mark Andrus
Good Bets:
"AMISTAD," David Franzoni
"THE FULL MONTY," Simon Beaufoy
The Competition:
"MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING," Ronald Bass
"IN & OUT," Paul Rudnick
"CHASING AMY," Kevin Smith
|
Best Original Screenplay Nominees:
"AS GOOD AS IT GETS," James L. Brooks & Mark Andrus
"BOOGIE NIGHTS," Paul Thomas Anderson
"DECONSTRUCTING HARRY," Woody Allen
"THE FULL MONTY," Simon Beaufoy
"GOOD WILL HUNTING," Ben Affleck & Matt Damon
|
Best Original Screenplay:
"GOOD WILL HUNTING"
Why it will win:
Dialogue, dialogue, dialogue. This film is almost all conversation, and every moment of it is riveting and genuine. Besides, Affleck and Damon are currently Hollywood's most visible, and charming, rising stars.
|
Best Original Screenplay Winner:
"GOOD WILL HUNTING," Ben Affleck & Matt Damon
|
SPLICED's Best Adapted Screenplay:
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL," Curtis Hanson & Brian Helgeland
|
Best Adapted Screenplay:
Sure Things:
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL," Curtis Hanson & Brian Helgeland
"KUNDUN," Melissa Matheson
"WAG THE DOG," Hilary Henkin & David Mamet
"THE ICE STORM," James Schamus
Good Bets:
"JACKIE BROWN," Quentin Tarantino
"CONTACT," David Franzoni
The Competition:
"OSCAR & LUCINDA," Laura Jones
|
Best Adapted Screenplay Nominees:
"DONNIE BRASCO," Paul Attanasio
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL," Curtis Hanson & Brian Helgeland
"THE SWEET HEREAFTER," Atom Egoyan
"WAG THE DOG," Hilary Henkin & David Mamet
"THE WINGS OF THE DOVE," Hossein Amini
|
Best Adapted Screenplay:
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
Why it will win:
Because the movie is even better than the book. Rewardingly intelligent and written with incredible period detail, this script did such justice to James Ellroy's novel that even the notoriously hard-to-please author loved the film.
However, don't completely count out "Wag the Dog." The Academy loves a wicked satire, and this is a dog bites.
|
Best Adapted Screenplay Winner:
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL," Curtis Hanson & Brian Helgeland
|
SPLICED's Best Art Direction:
"THE FIFTH ELEMENT"
|
Best Art Direction:
Sure Things:
"TITANIC"
"BOOGIE NIGHTS"
"THE FIFTH ELEMENT"
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
And one of the following:
"GATTACA"
"KUNDUN"
"THE PILLOW BOOK"
"THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE"
"OSCAR & LUCINDA"
|
Best Art Direction Nominees:
"GATTACA"
"KUNDUN"
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
"MEN IN BLACK"
"TITANIC"
|
Best Art Direction:
"TITANIC"
Why it will win:
Because the set director even had the silverware monogrammed for the sake of authenticity. No film has ever gone to the lengths "Titanic" did to bring a place to life.
In any other year, the gorgeous "Confidential," uber-modern "Gattaca" or panoramic "Kundun" would be neck-and-neck, but even at the Oscars, the "Titanic" juggernaut is unstoppable.
|
Best Art Direction Winner:
"TITANIC"
|
SPLICED's Best Cinematography:
"OSCAR & LUCINDA"
|
Best Cinematography:
Sure Things:
"TITANIC"
"CONTACT"
"OSCAR & LUCINDA"
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
Good Bets:
"KUNDUN"
"THE WINGS OF THE DOVE"
The Competition:
"THE SWEET HEREAFTER"
"AMISTAD"
|
Best Cinematography Nominees:
"AMISTAD," Janusz Kaminski
"KUNDUN," Roger Deakins
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL," Dante Spinotti
"TITANIC," Russell Carpenter
"THE WINGS OF THE DOVE," Eduardo Serra
|
Best Cinematography:
"TITANIC"
Why it will win:
"Confidential" and "Kundun" are equally qualified, but sheer momentum will carry the doomed-boat movie to many a technical Oscar, including this one.
|
Best Cinematography Winner:
"TITANIC," Russell Carpenter
|
SPLICED's Best Editing:
"TITANIC"
|
Best Editing:
"TITANIC"
"BOOGIE NIGHTS"
"CONTACT"
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
Except for "Titanic," I'm just guessing here. This category isn't my strong suit!
|
Best Editing Nominees:
"AIR FORCE ONE"
"AS GOOD AS IT GETS"
"GOOD WILL HUNTING"
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
"TITANIC"
|
Best Editing:
"TITANIC"
Why it will win:
Because James Cameron dropped all the subplots and stayed focused.
"Titanic" is an amazingly tight three and a quarter hours and, unlike every other disaster movie ever, there's only one story -- the one people care about.
|
Best Editing Winner:
"TITANIC"
|
SPLICED's Best Sound:
Dunno.
|
Best Sound:
I don't know enough about this category to make a list, but I'm sure "TITANIC" will get yet another nod here.
|
Best Sound Nominees:
"AIR FORCE ONE"
"CON AIR"
"CONTACT"
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
"TITANIC"
|
Best Sound:
"TITANIC"
Why it will win:
Momentum again. But in this category, the win is earned. Cameron poured over every technical detail of his picture and the sound design did as much to take you inside this story as anything you see on the screen.
|
Best Sound Winner:
"TITANIC"
|
SPLICED's Best Visual Effects:
"TITANIC"
|
Best Visual Effects:
The Sure Thing:
"TITANIC"
This category always has a perfectly obvious winner and a few also-rans. The bridesmaids will be:
"STARSHIP TROOPERS"
"THE FIFTH ELEMENT"
"THE LOST WORLD"
|
Best Visual Effects Nominees:
"THE LOST WORLD"
"STARSHIP TROOPERS"
"TITANIC"
|
Best Visual Effects:
"TITANIC"
Why it will win:
There is always one clear winner in this category, and "Titanic" sets a new standard for special effects like no other film has since "Star Wars."
|
Best Visual Effects Winner:
"TITANIC"
|
SPLICED's Best Costume Design:
"THE FIFTH ELEMENT"
|
Best Costume Design:
Sure Things:
"TITANIC"
"THE FIFTH ELEMENT"
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL"
Good Bets:
"AMISTAD"
"THE WINGS OF THE DOVE"
The Competition:
"BOOGIE NIGHTS"
"KUNDUN"
|
Best Costume Design Nominees:
"AMISTAD," Ruth E. Carter
"KUNDUN," Dante Ferretti
"OSCAR & LUCINDA," Janet Patterson
"TITANIC," Deborah L. Scott
"THE WINGS OF THE DOVE"
|
Best Costume Design:
"TITANIC"
Why it will win:
Authenticity. Like its Art Direction, the costumes in "Titanic" boast incredible hours of research and the most remarkable detail. Designer Deborah Scott even went to the trouble of sewing costumes with beads from dresses worn by survivors of the real sinking.
|
Best Costume Design Winner:
"TITANIC," Deborah L. Scott
|
SPLICED's Best Makeup:
"BOOGIE NIGHTS" (oh, that blue eye shadow!)
|
Best Makeup:
This category always goes to special effects makeup, and there weren't that many makeup effects films in 1997, so I'm guessing:
"MEN IN BLACK"
"THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE"
"AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN PARIS"
and a couple more.
|
Best Makeup Nominees:
"MEN IN BLACK"
"HER MAJESTY MRS. BROWN"
"TITANIC"
|
Best Makeup:
"MEN IN BLACK"
Why it will win:
Vincent D'Onofrio's slip 'n' slide skin.
Special effects makeup always wins in this category, and the alien wearing a dead farmer as an ill-fitting shell was the creepiest, funniest effect of the year.
|
Best Makeup Winner:
"MEN IN BLACK"
|
SPLICED's Best Feature Documentary:
Didn't see any that would qualify this year, believe it or not.
|
Best Documentary:
There were few high-profile documentaries in 1997, but the Academy regularly ignores most of the good ones anyway, so the few recognizable films this year, like "Fast, Cheap & Out of Control," "Waco: Rules of Engagement" and "Sick" don't stand a chance.
The one Sure Thing is Spike Lee's "4 LITTLE GIRLS"
|
Best Feature Documentary Nominees:
"AYN RAND: A SENSE OF LIFE"
"COLORS STRAIGHT UP"
"4 LITTLE GIRLS"
"THE LONG WAY HOME"
"WACO: THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT"
|
Best Feature Documentary:
"4 LITTLE GIRLS"
Why it will win:
A moving story, a history lesson and besides Spike Lee is the only black nominee, which has been a thorny PR issue for the Academy in the past.
|
Best Feature Documentary Winner:
"THE LONG WAY HOME"
|
SPLICED's Best Foreign Film:
"PONETTE"
|
Best Foreign Film:
This category works a little funny, with competing countries submitting one film for consideration. I don't know which movie each country is pimping, so I have no guesses here. But I will say if "PONETTE" isn't nominated it would be a crime.
|
Best Foreign Film Nominees:
"BEYOND SILENCE" (Germany)
"CHARACTER" (The Netherlands)
"FOUR DAYS IN SEPTEMBER" (Brazil)
"SECRETS OF THE HEART" (Spain)
"THE THIEF" (Russia)
|
Best Foreign Film:
"FOUR DAYS IN SEPTEMBER" (Brazil)
Why it will win:
Because it's the most accessible film for American audiences. It even stars an American, Alan Arkin.
|
Best Foreign Film Winner:
"CHARACTER" (The Netherlands)
|
SPLICED's Best Sound Effects Editing:
"TITANIC"
|
Best Sound Effects Editing:
"TITANIC"
"STARSHIP TROOPERS"
"THE FIFTH ELEMENT"
|
Best Sound Effects Editing Nominees:
"FACE/OFF"
"THE FIFTH ELEMENT"
"TITANIC"
|
Best Sound Effects Editing:
"TITANIC"
Why it will win:
Because the sound of rushing water and the ship breaking in half echoes in our heads even now.
|
Best Sound Effects Editing Winner:
"TITANIC"
|
SPLICED's Best Dramatic Score:
"TITANIC", James Horner
|
Best Dramatic Score:
Sure Things:
"TITANIC," James Horner
"AMISTAD," John Williams
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL," Jerry Goldsmith
Good Bets:
"KUNDUN," Phillip Glass
The Competition:
"SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET,",John Williams
"CONTACT"
|
Best Dramatic Score Nominees:
"AMISTAD," John Williams
GOOD WILL HUNTING," Danny Elfman
"KUNDUN", Phillip Glass
"L.A. CONFIDENTIAL," Jerry Goldsmith
"TITANIC," James Horner
|
Best Dramatic Score:
"TITANIC"
Why it will win:
When was the last time you left a movie humming the incidental music? When was the last time a soundtrack of incidental music topped the charts?
|
Best Dramatic Score Winner:
"TITANIC," James Horner
|
SPLICED's Best Musical/Comedy Score:
Dunno.
|
Best Musical/Comedy Score:
Sure Things:
"HERCULES"
"ANASTASIA"
"AS GOOD AS IT GETS"
"MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING," James Newton Howard
And one more.
|
Best Musical/Comedy Score Nominees:
"ANASTASIA," Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens
"AS GOOD AS IT GETS," Hans Zimmer
"THE FULL MONTY," Anne Dudley
"MEN IN BLACK," Danny Elfman
"MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING," James Newton Howard
|
Best Musical/Comedy Score:
"ANASTASIA"
Why it will win:
I'm guessing. Honestly, I have no idea.
|
Best Musical/Comedy Score Winner:
"THE FULL MONTY," Anne Dudley
|
SPLICED's Best Original Song:
Who gives a damn?
|
Best Original Song:
Why this is an Oscar category has always been beyond me, and frankly I couldn't care less about Best Song. But animated movies are perennial favorites here, so you can bet on tunes "HERCULES" and "ANASTASIA" along with that Celine Dion ditty from the closing credits of "TITANIC"
|
Best Original Song Nominees:
"Go the Distance" from "HERCULES"
"How Do I Live" from "CON AIR"
"Journey to the Past" from "ANASTASIA"
"Miss Misery" from "GOOD WILL HUNTING"
"My Heart Will Go On" from "TITANIC."
|
Best Original Song:
"My Heart Will Go On" from "TITANIC."
Why it will win:
Because when you hear it, you think of the movie.
Even if this tune gets on your nerves, you gotta admit it causes flashbacks, even if you manage somehow to hear it on the radio without those annoying audio drops that Top 40 stations are playing on top of the music.
|
Best Original Song Winner:
"My Heart Will Go On" from "TITANIC."
|
