Nomination domination...

Note to Hollywood luminaries: If you worked with Steven Speilberg, Jim Carrey, or Gwynnie in 1998, be sure to set your alarm for 6 a.m. on February 9th, because your name will probably be somewhere on the Academy Award nomination roll call announced at that ungodly hour of the morning.

Everybody else in town better get up early, too, because while "Saving Private Ryan," "The Truman Show" and "Shakespeare in Love" are certain to score the most Oscar nods on that crisp morning, very little is certain beyond that. A handful of important categories are too close to call, with up to 7 or 8 possible nominees neck and neck in the polls. Another bunch of categories that often have obvious winners before the nominations are even announced (like visual effects) are completely up for grabs.

Predicting the Oscar nominations this year was like throwing darts, but for better or worse, here's the way I say it will shake out, and the way I think it ought to be.

(Movies without links: reviews coming soon, I swear!)

Split decision...

Oh, for another "Titanic" to make handicapping the Oscars winners easy.

Last year, if an award wasn't in an acting category and the big boat movie was nominated, there was little doubt. Best Sound? Easy - "Titanic." Best Dramatic score? No contest - "Titanic." Cinematography? "Titanic," natch.

But the only sure bet for the 71st Academy Awards is that bullets and The Bard will dominate. Wildcards abound in major categories, leaving even the most experienced oddsmen scratching their heads. There is no doubt that "Saving Private Ryan" and "Shakespeare in Love" will cull the most statuettes, but they're both nominated in so many of the same categories that is some cases it's a toss-up between them.

Outside the major six catagories (Picture, Director, acting and screenplays), it will likely shake out with "Ryan" pocketing the "hard" (technical) categories and "Shakespeare" collecting the "soft" (artistic) categories.

So after Sunday night, your Oscar scorecard should look something like this:

SPLICEDwire's choice:
"BUFFALO '66"
B E S T

P I C T U R E
PREDICTED nominees:
Sure Things:
"SAVING PRIVATE RYAN"
"SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE"
"THE THIN RED LINE"
"THE TRUMAN SHOW"

The fifth Best Picture slot will likely go to "ELIZABETH" or "GODS & MONSTERS", but "A SIMPLE PLAN" is also in the running. And don't forget this year's Littie Brit Indies That Could, "WAKING NED DEVINE" and "LITTLE VOICE".
NOMINEES:
"ELIZABETH"
"LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL"
"SAVING PRIVATE RYAN"
"SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE"
"THE THIN RED LINE"
B E S T

P I C T U R E
What will win:
"SAVING PRIVATE RYAN"

Why:
Because the unprecedented battle scenes are the most realistic war footage ever set to fiction.

But here's the funny thing: I have this odd feeling in my tummy that "SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE" might pull one of the biggest upsets in Academy history by sneaking in under the radar and spiriting off with the spoils of this Hollywood war. For goodness sake don't quote me on that, but if it happens remember where you heard it first. (Yes, I'm trying to have it both ways.)

What should win: "SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE"

WINNER:
"SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE"

Did I get it right?  Well, sorta...
What's my score?  .5 for 1
I'll give myself 1/2 a point since I was right, but I didn't have the balls to go out on a limb.

PREDICTED nominees:
Sure Things:
Steven Spielberg, "SAVING PRIVATE RYAN"
Terrence Malick, "THE THIN RED LINE"
John Madden, "SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE"

Good Bets:
Peter Weir, "THE TRUMAN SHOW"
Bill Condon, "GODS & MONSTERS"

The Competition:
Shekhar Kapur, "ELIZABETH"
Sam Raimi, "A SIMPLE PLAN"

NOMINEES:
Roberto Benigni, "LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL"

Peter Weir, "THE TRUMAN SHOW"

B E S T

D I R E C T O R

Who will win:
Steven Spielberg, "SAVING PRIVATE RYAN"

Why:
Those battle scenes, again. If there's one thing Spielberg does best it's over-produce. In "Private Ryan" he found an extraordinary outlet for it.

Who should win: Peter Weir

WINNER:
Steven Spielberg, "SAVING PRIVATE RYAN"

PREDICTED nominees:
The Sure Thing:
Ian McKellen, ""GODS & MONSTERS"

Good Bets (in decending order of likelihood):
Nick Nolte, "AFFLICTION"
Tom Hanks, "SAVING PRIVATE RYAN"
Jim Carrey, "THE TRUMAN SHOW"
Edward Norton, "AMERICAN HISTORY X"

The Competition
Stephen Fry, "WILDE"
Roberto Benigni, "LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL"

False buzz: John Travolta for "A CIVIL ACTION." Hear me now: Not gonna happen. Jim Carrey's nomination was also unlikely -- the Academy is not ready to honor a guy who just three years ago was doing Tarzan yells out of his ass -- until his Golden Globe win boosted his cred.

NOMINEES:
Roberto Benigni, "LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL"
Tom Hanks, "SAVING PRIVATE RYAN"
Ian McKellen, ""GODS & MONSTERS"
Nick Nolte, "AFFLICTION"
Edward Norton, "AMERICAN HISTORY X"

B E S T

A C T O R

Who will win:
Ian McKellen, ""GODS & MONSTERS"

Why:
Hollywood loves to see itself revered and reviled, and McKellen does both in what is arguably the best performance of an incredible career, in a movie that didn't get as much recognition as it deserved from the Academy. Bonus: McKellen would be the first openly gay actor to win in a gay role.

Who should win: Edward Norton

WINNER:
Roberto Benigni, "LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL"

PREDICTED nominees:

Cate Blanchett, "ELIZABETH"
Gwyneth Paltrow, "SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE"
Emily Watson, "HILARY & JACKIE"

And probably:
Jane Horrocks, "LITTLE VOICE"
Fernanda Montenegro, "CENTRAL STATION"

The Competition:
Christina Ricci, "THE OPPOSITE OF SEX"
Ally Sheedy, "HIGH ART"

It's going to be an all-indie year in this category because studio contenders Susan Sarandon ("STEPMOM") & Meryl Streep ("ONE TRUE THING") will likely cancel each other out with their dueling cancer mom roles.

NOMINEES:
Cate Blanchett, "ELIZABETH"
Fernanda Montenegro, "CENTRAL STATION"
Gwyneth Paltrow, "SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE"
Meryl Streep, "ONE TRUE THING"
Emily Watson, "HILARY & JACKIE"

B E S T

A C T R E S S

Who will win:
Gwyneth Paltrow, "SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE"

Why:
Because this performance proves she really is that good, in spite of all the people saying how good she is. Playing both Romeo's and Juilet's part so passionately in the same movie, not to mention "Twelfth Night's" Viola and her own character, the Viola that inspired The Bard, Paltrow is what audiences remember most in a movie that isn't even primarily about her character.

Who should win: Emily Watson

WINNER:
Gwyneth Paltrow, "SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE"

PREDICTED nominees:
Sure Things:
Michael Caine, "LITTLE VOICE"
Billy Bob Thornton, "A SIMPLE PLAN"

Good Bets:
Geoffrey Rush, "SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE"
Bill Murray, "RUSHMORE"
Robert Duvall, "A CIVIL ACTION"

The Competition:
Ed Harris, "THE TRUMAN SHOW"
Dylan Baker, "HAPPINESS"

False buzz: Any of the "SAVING PRIVATE RYAN" grunts. Too many of them not to split the vote. And Brendan Fraser was good in "GODS & MONSTERS", but not that good.

NOMINEES:
James Coburn, "AFFLICTION"
Robert Duvall, "A CIVIL ACTION"
Ed Harris, "THE TRUMAN SHOW"
Geoffrey Rush, "SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE"
Billy Bob Thornton, "A SIMPLE PLAN"

S U P P O R T I N G

A C T O R

Who will win:
James Coburn, "AFFLICTION"

Why:
Because he was so good as a abusive father audiences wanted to beat him up even though he was an old man. But then my track record in the supporting categories is dismal, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Ed Harris win. In fact, the only nominee I can rule out here is Rush, Best Actor winner two years ago for "Shine," whose clown role in "Shakespeare" looks terribly light against his competition.

Who should win: Coburn

WINNER:
James Coburn, "AFFLICTION"

Good Bets:

Joan Allen, "PLEASANTVILLE"

And either:
Lisa Kudrow, "THE OPPOSITE OF SEX"
Kathy Bates, "PRIMARY COLORS"

False buzz: Julia Roberts in "STEPMOM".

NOMINEES:

Lynn Redgrave, "GODS & MONSTERS"

S U P P O R T I N G

A C T R E S S

Who will win:
Judi Dench, "SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE"

Why:
Because the Academy can honor her this year to make up for robbing her last year, when nominated for playing another English monarch in "Mrs. Brown." Plus, this performance, while brief (she's only in "Shakespeare" for 9 minutes), is completely distinct but just as spectacular.

Who should win: Lynn Redgrave

WINNER:
Judi Dench, "SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE"

"SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE," Mark Norman & Tom Stoppard

Why:
Details, details, details! With fun bits of Shakespearean legend and Elizabethan history cropping up in half the movie's scenes, it's a wonder Norman and Stoppard had the time to work in such an engrossing love story, which the did, beautifully.

Who should win: "SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE"

"GODS & MONSTERS," Bill Condon

Good Bets:
"AFFLICTION," Paul Schrader
"HILARY & JACKIE," Frank Cottrell Boyce
"THE THIN RED LINE," Terrence Malick

The Competition:
This category is the tightest of the year, and any of the good bets could get bumped a dark horse contender like "A CIVIL ACTION" or "LITTLE VOICE," or for a critics' darling that croaked at the box office like "BELOVED" or "OUT OF SIGHT."

NOMINEES:

"OUT OF SIGHT," Scott Frank
"PRIMARY COLORS," Elaine May
"A SIMPLE PLAN," Scott B. Smith
"THE THIN RED LINE," Terrence Malick

A D A P T E D

S C R E E N P L A Y

What will win:
"OUT OF SIGHT," Scott Frank

Why:
Because this movie deserves something. Critics and writer's guild voters agree, this is the best Elmore Leonard adaptation to date, yet it inexplicably flopped at the box office. Usually that alone would rule it out, but the Academy is becoming less snooty about a movie's take and everyone in Hollywood loved this film.

Who should win: "GODS & MONSTERS"

"GODS & MONSTERS," Bill Condon
