Sword and sandal epic takes five awards as Oscars spread out among nominated films
"Gladiator," last summer's huge-budget Roman action-adventure drama, was honored as 2000's Best Picture award at the 73rd Academy Awards Sunday night. Russell Crowe, the film's charismatic star, won for Best Actor, and statuettes were awarded for the movie's costumes, special effects and sound design.
Four awards, including Best Foreign Language Film, went to Ang Lee's hugely successful "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." Heavily favored for the Best Director nod, Lee lost that category to Steven Soderbergh for "Traffic," which came as a surprise since the director had two films in the running and it was widely assumed he'd cancel himself out. To no one's surprise, Julia Roberts won best actress for "Erin Brockovich," Soderbergh's other nominated film.
The big surprise of the night was when Marcia Gay Harden beat out stiff competition from Judi Dench and Kate Hudson to win Best Supporting Actress for "Pollock."
Here's a complete list of winners, along with our predictions (noted by a bullet) and our preferences (noted by a plus)...
