    No predictions. Don't care.

Several surprise nominations for the 76th annual Academy Awards don't include the expected 11 nods for 'Rings'

    By Rob Blackwelder

    Tuesday, January 27, 2004

The final installment of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy led the Oscar nominations this morning with 11 nods, and the Academy announced a few surprises too, the most notable being the Best Actress nomination of 14-year-old Keisha Castle-Hughes for "Whale Rider," a sleeper-hit independent film from Australia about a Maori girl trying to prove her worth as a tribal leader.

Castle-Hughes' nod stirred industry speculation about the marketing campaigns for the films "Thirteen" and "Lost in Translation," both of which featured praised performances from teenage stars (Evan Rachel Wood and Scarlett Johansson, respectively) whose names were getting considerable Oscar buzz -- most of it about how they would be overlooked because of their ages (14 and 19), and about how Focus Features may have blown Johansson's chances by campaigning for her as a supporting actress when she was clearly the film's lead.

Also garnering more notice than expected was "City of God," a Brazilian film released last January about youth gangs in Rio de Janeiro. The film was nominated for Best Directing (by Kátia Lund and Fernando Meirelles), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Cinematography.

The strong showing of Jim Sheridan's immigrant fable "In America," turned some heads as well, with nods for Samantha Morton as Best Actress and Djimon Hounsou as Best Supporting Actor.

Another shock to the Oscar system was the absence of either a Best Picture or Best Director nod for "Cold Mountain," not because the Civil War epic was anything special, but because the marketing juggernaut of Miramax Films hasn't been denied a Best Picture nomination in more than a decade.

Here the complete list of this year's Oscar nominees:
