Fantasy film leads Oscar nominations with 13 nods, 'Beautiful Mind,' 'Moulin Rouge' get 8 each

By Rob Blackwelder

"Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" led all nominees for the 74th annual Academy Awards, announced this morning. The film received nods for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor and recognition in several artistic and technical categories.

"A Beautiful Mind" and "Moulin Rouge" were nominated for eight awards each, but Baz Lurhmann, the latter film's director, was snubbed in the Best Director category. Meanwhile, two directors -- "Mulholland Drive's" David Lynch and "Black Hawk Down's" Ridley Scott -- were nominated even though their films were not.

Among the nominations few other surprises, the French import "Amélie" was honored with six nods and Renee Zellweger received a Best Actress nomination for "Bridget Jones's Diary," which is unusual since the film 1) is a comedy, and 2) was released all the way back in April (the Academy has a notoriously short memory).
