'Beautiful Mind' takes 4 awards at annual Hollywood Foreign Press ceremony, 'Moulin Rouge' wins 3
Russell Crowe seemed to want to demonstrate his ability to play the Hollywood game at the 2002 Golden Globe awards last night when he accepted Best Actor in a Drama honors for his starring role in "A Beautiful Mind."
"It's just a piece of entertainment at the end of the day, folks," he said about the film. "But hopefully it helps us open our hearts, gives us a little more understanding, gives us a little more compassion, and also, hopefully it gives us the belief that in our lives something extraordinary can always happen."
The speech, which showed none of the spontaneity of his Oscar acceptance last year for "Gladiator," may have been an attempt by the actor, notorious for his disdain of the showbiz machinery, to show Academy members that he'd be willing to make nice if they were to grace him with back-to-back Best Actor honors at the 74th annual Academy Awards this coming March.
As a Globe winner, Crowe was in familiar company last night. "A Beautiful Mind" dominated dramatic categories in the awards handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, taking home additional statuettes for Best Picture (Drama), Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Connelly) and Best Screenplay (by Akiva Goldsman).
The night's other big motion picture winner was "Moulin Rouge," which was honored with Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Actress in a Drama (Nicole Kidman), and Best Original Score (by Craig Armstrong.)
